Description
Tomás Postigo 3º Año | D.O. Ribera del Duero
The crianza from one of the most veteran winemakers in the Ribera del Duero. A blend of Tinto Fino with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, aged for twelve months in French oak.
What 3º Año means
The name refers to time: the wine is not released until its third year after the harvest, following fermentation, barrel aging and bottle rest. It is the winery's way of naming its crianza without resorting to the conventional label.
The winemaker behind the wine
Tomás Postigo began working in the Ribera del Duero in 1984 and was winemaker at Pago de Carraovejas before launching his own project. He introduced practices to the appellation that are now commonplace, such as drip irrigation, aging in French oak and gravity-flow winemaking, and was one of the first to bet on blends with non-native varieties.
A wine from many plots
The grapes come from small vineyards spread across different villages of the Ribera, between 750 and almost 1,000 meters above sea level, on limestone and sandy-loam soils with plenty of stones and pebbles. Each plot and each variety is vinified separately, and the oak comes from different French forests. The result is dozens of different wines that are then blended: this diversity of origin is what builds the complexity of the whole.
Winemaking
Hand-harvested into small 12 kg crates. The grapes are destemmed and moved into tank by gravity, without crushing. Part of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel, and aging lasts 12 months in 225-liter French oak barrels.
Tasting note
On the nose, ripe red fruit dominates, with balsamic notes, aromatic herbs and toasty notes from the oak. On the palate it is complex and intense, smooth, with sweet tannins and hints of licorice and sweet spices.
Serving and pairing
Serve at around 16 ºC. Decanting before serving is recommended. Pairs with roast or grilled red meat, rice dishes with meat and cured cheeses.
A note
Because of its natural winemaking, the wine may show sediment in the bottle. This is normal and does not affect its quality; decanting separates it.
